When DP Ruto’s critics say he holds a big office without a portfolio, then they surely mean it. This was evident when William Ruto left Mombasa for Mombasa late last months and was accorded no government planes for his transportation.
During the visit, DP William Ruto used a commercial Kenya Airways plane and stayed at the private hotel instead of his official residence at the coastal city.
There were no military planes or police planes to carry him as it always the norms for a top government official.
In normal times, when William Ruto would use a military plane, his Chief of Staff would write ti the VVIP wing of the military with the itinerary, and once the availability of the plane has been confirmed, a passenger manifest would be issued.
The military would then contact the airport for advance arrangement, and the same would be communicated to the Head of Public Service who would facilitate the trip.
Until now we are yet to determine whether the DP willingly opted to forgo that luxury or was forced by the circumstances. However, Ruto’s handlers told a local publication that the DP is planning to fly commercial for the foreseeable future.
Ruto’s deputy spokesperson Emmanuel Talan told Sunday Nation that his boss is “comfortable in the position, given by the people in the last two elections”.
“He is not the complaining type. He wants the President to build his legacy and is committed to helping him achieve that,” said Talam who declined to tell the publication whether the DP’s office has in recent times sought to get a military or police plane.
Jubilee deputy secretary-general Caleb Kositany however waxed lyrical on the matter saying Ruto is increasingly becoming independent and would like to “rely on personal logistical solution as opposed to State offering”.
“They have shown him that he is unwanted and he has decided to engage wananchi from his pocket if need be. He was not born to wealth or state largesse and therefore financing his travels is not a big deal. He will walk to meet the people if need be,” he told Nation.

When Interior PS Karanja Kibicho was contacted to answer on whether DP Ruto was denied to have access on government planes, he did not respond to the publication
Apart from being denied access to government facilities, Ruto had previously denied access to the Deputy President’s official residence in Mombasa.
Ruto has previously mentioned the likes of Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe and those surrounding the President as the ones frustrating his ambition of becoming the President come 2022.
