Since the onset of COVID-19 cases in Kenya, the country has been riddled with growing instances of police brutality in various counties.
Various influencers and individuals in the entertainment industry tried their best to call out rogue officers who took their power way too far. Njugush decided to call out perpetrators through a creative video shared on Instagram.
Anyone who did not appreciate art could immediately brush the clip off as one of the artiste’s gimmicks but the enlightened few immediately pointed out the underlying message.
Titled Why Do You Hate Njahi, Njugush’s video delivered some hard-hitting truths that forced Kenyans to check their privilege. He likened poor people to njahi and equated the struggles and hatred they experience to the dislike people have for the dark beans.
The entertainer questioned why Kenyans were too invested in the ills of foreign countries while they were still afraid to speak against brutality by police back home.
He said poor people were often overlooked and guys always turned a blind eye whenever the less fortunate were faced with unnecessary evils. “Why do you hate njahi? Why do you favour other beans from other countries? One bean shot a Dj and it is now being praised for teaching maths on the internet. Why do you hate njahi?” he posed.
Njugush’s well thought out poem also addressed Babu Owino’s shooting saga and lashed out at people who condoned it or swept it under the rag. His poetic justice can only be likened to King Kaka’s Wajinga Nyinti and Childish Gambino’s This Is America.
This follows an uproar on Twitter over pretentious Kenyans who are quick to push the #Blacklivesmatter movement forgetting the deplorable nature of freedom in their backyard.
Netizens argued that a lot of Kenyans still condone tribalism in their homes and smile at the face of brutality by police officers.
