A Nigerian man who has been practicing law for the last 10 year without legit papers was arrested after his tricks were unraveled.
Adeola Babatunde was discovered to be a fake lawyer after he appeared before a magistrate court in Osun state as a counsel.
On March 10, 2021, Bababtunde appeared before Magistrate A. A Adeyeba in Osogbo, Osun State to move a motion.
However, it is alleged that he presented himself inappropriately raising suspicions in the court room.
“The way and manner he conducted himself in the court raised suspicion, which prompted one of the lawyers at the bar, O.U Yussuf, to call the attention of the Magistrate to the inappropriate way Babatunde addressed the court,” a report from a Nigerian media outlet reads.
Yusuf then made an oral application to the court to have Babatunde’s status as a lawyer be investigated leading to the discovery of his tricks.
The magistrate then ordered the arrest of the fake lawyer who was later charged by Police in a case file number MOS/152C/2021.
The Ministry of Justice took over the case from the police after the union requested it to do so according to a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Osogbo branch, Dawood Ajetunmobi.
The suspect was arraigned in court on Wednesday, 8, September 2021 but the trial failed to kick off since there was no lawyer representing him.
The prosecutor requested for the adjournment of the case to September 24, 2021 however Chief Magistrate, A.K Ajala declined
The suspect will now be arraigned afresh in court since the case was being brought before the magistrate for the first time.
