Sonko News has learnt that there were efforts by former Football Federation Kenya (FKF) boss Mr. Nick Mwendwa to escape from the country on Tuesday.
Nick Mwendwa who has a court hearing on Thursday had reportedly left to go to the CAF_Online ExCo General Assembly but the same was thwarted by the hawk eyed immigration.
However, it is not clear why the embattled FKF president wanted to attend the regional CECAFA General Assembly which is on 25th November and a Caf extraordinary assembly the following day in Cairo.
“Breaking: Attempts by Nick Mwendwa to fly out of the country to attend CAF meeting thwarted.Red alert issued in all airports. His passport will be withheld. CAF sent him a ticket…& govt notified.. What followed was a red alert. In the coming hours, expect DCI to raid his apartment & take the Passport.” Said the source.
Nick Mwendwa through his defense counsel really fought hard to allow him enjoy some freedom pending investigations. However, he now risks being slapped with contempt of court charges because the judge barred him from participating in any football related activity.
Troubles for Mwendwa began over the embezzlement of Kshs 500 million that the government allocated to the Football Federation of Kenya (FKF). Specifically, he was accused of abuse of office, mismanaging the federation and misuse of taxpayers’ money.
As a result, the former FKF president was arrested by police on Friday November 12 afternoon while at Safari Park hotel in Nairobi where he had gone to pay a courtesy call to Harambee stars players who had just arrived in the country after facing Uganda in the world cup qualifiers.
On Thursday November 11, Sports CS Amina Mohamed disbanded the FKF board and appointed a caretaker committee to be in charge of the federation after receiving an audit report from Sports Registrar Rose Wasike.
However, the tough headed Nick Mwendwa insisted that he is still in charge of football in the country, maintaining that he does not recognize the 15-member caretaker committee.
“As FKF, we reject this committee. We rebuke it, and we will not accept it. No committee will take charge of Harambee Stars. FKF will be in charge,” he stated.
Following the news of his attempted escape, Kenyans had these to say:
“Huyu atarudi kwa cell tena on a Friday na atolewe Monday… Government usicheze naye.
We deported Miguna who is a Kenyan.”
“This what we call arrogance!”
“Wangeliwacha aende afike the next airport ,then awe deported back. ..ndio ajifunze.”
