New Hope For Student Who Missed University Admission 14 Years ago

Date:

32-year old Milly Nafula has not lost hope of joining university to pursue a degree, 14 years after sitting her KCSE exams.

Milly resolved to work in a posho mill in a bid to fend for her two children despite the fact that she passed with flying colors.

She scored an A-  in the 2007 KCSE exams that she sat at Manor House High School in Kitale but as fate would have it, Milly never received a calling letter to join any university.

After failing to receive a university admission letter, she visited her school and the principal told her that the school had not received her letter from the Joint Admissions Board, (JAB).

“The time that I was to get my admission to the University, I did not get it and I went to the principal to raise the issue and I was told that the school had not received any,” she told Citizen TV.

Efforts to reach out to JAB, which was later changed to KUCCPS, since then have however proved futile.

“I was also advised to go to Nairobi to ask about the matter but because I could not afford the fare, I wrote a letter to the board through the District Officer in charge of Kitale in 2009. He sent the letter but there was no response,”  Milly narrated her encounter.

The mother of two hopes that she will get a chance and pursue a degree in medicine.

“My dream as an orphan was to go out there and then come and change the life of my family since my mother was a single mother. I also have my brothers who I am looking after. I also save with the hope of one day joining school so that I can learn,” she said.

However, Milly’s story might just change after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO Agnes Wahome said that the body would help her to pursue a degree.

Wahome asked her to write to KUCCPS and provide all the details required.

“The issue of Milly Nafula is a 2011 case when KUCCPS was not established and at that time placements were conducted by the Joints Admission Board. Now that KUCCPS is in charge, Nafula should write to the body and bring the matter to our attention. We can only act if she writes to us. We promise to assist once we get all the facts,” Wahome said in a statement.
