Nairobi Traffic Police Caught in Viral Clip Suspended

The National Police Service has taken action after a traffic officer was recorded allegedly collecting bribes along Jogoo Road in Nairobi.

In a clip which went viral on Thursday, April 11, the officer was captured stopping public service vehicles and then allegedly collecting bribes from them.

The clip caused uproar with sections of Kenyans online asking the government to take action.

In a report released on Friday, April 12, the National Police Service identified the said officer as Haron Mwangi, attached to Traffic within Buruburu Police Station.

NPS indicated the officer has been suspended pending plans for his dismissal from duty.

“Please be informed that the National Police Service has positively identified the Traffic Police Officer seen in the video clip circulating on social media, while allegedly collecting bribes from public service vehicles,” the statement read in part.

“The Officer, No. 63151 PC Haron Mwangi, attached to Traffic within Buruburu Police Station has been suspended from Traffic Police Unit with immediate effect, and proceedings for his dismissal are ongoing,” it added.

NPS appreciated the public for helping to raise that issue and vowed to continue upholding integrity among the members of the disciplined service.

“The National Police Service takes this opportunity to commend members of the public and Members of the Press for their continued collaboration with NPS in the fight against corruption,” NPS indicated.

“The National Police Service remains committed to its constitutional mandate of fighting corruption; striving for the highest standards of professionalism and discipline among its members; promoting accountability and transparency; and upholding the rule of law.”
