Days after Governor Kawira Mwangaza okayed plans to permanently end disputes, a group of Meru residents launched a signature collection drive.
A group of residents and civil society groups on Monday November 20 kickstarted the exercise which they argued was aimed at the suspension of the Meru county assembly.
Mwangaza had supported the move insisting that it would give the leaders opportunity to seek a fresh mandate from the electorates.
This was after surviving her second impeachment motion at the Senate.
Speaking during the exercise in Nkubu, Imenti South, the residents said they were tired of the bickering between Governor Kawira Mwangaza and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and called on President William Ruto to suspend the devolved entity.
James Kinoti, a Meru resident, said since the August 9 elections last year, the leaders have only been fighting and called on the President to suspend the county.
“We want to go back to the polls and elect new leaders because the current ones have failed us. Let them go home, we will elect new leaders who have our interests at heart,” he said.
Kiagu MCA Simon Kiambi, who has been a staunch supporter of the governor, also added his signature.
“We have failed the people of Meru as leaders and I call on the President to suspend the county,” he stated.
