Cessation of movement in Eastleigh and Old Town declared-Mutahi Kagwe

Mutahi Kagwe, the Health CS on Wednesday, May 6, announced a cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh in Nairobi and Mombasa Old Town.

Speaking from Afya House in Nairobi, the CS announced that the cessation of movement would commence on Wednesday, May 6 from 7 p.m.

“There shall be the cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh area of Nairobi with effect from today the 6th of May at 7 pm for the next 15 days.

“There shall be the cessation of movement in the area known as Old Town in Mombasa effective today, the 6th of May at 7 pm for the next 15 days,” the CS announced.
Kagwe further declared that there would be closure of any markets, restaurants and eateries within the two areas for the next 15 days.

Further, the CS stated that government quarantine facilities would be occupied by those directed to by the Ministry of Health, adding that the occupants would not be charged.
“The is to facilitate those who feel they won’t go for testing due to the cost of quarantine,” he stated.

Kagwe stated that the measures set by the government had not been set in order to punish Kenyans, rather, to protect those in both Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town, who may get the disease from movements of persons.

“You can go and shop in the area. What you cannot do is leave the area to go to another area. Specific geographical locations will be clarified by the Ministry of Interior Coordination of the National Government.

“Public transportation is not allowed to go into these areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Kenya recorded 47 new COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 582.
Another 8 people had been discharged bringing total recoveries to 190 and two more people had died from the virus, bringing the number of fatalities to 26.
