Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni says he is not in a position to endorse his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as his successor.
According to him, the ruling party NRM is the one to decide on the matter and they are guided by some principles including patriotism.
“I am a member of something called the National Resistance Movement. So I go with what NRM decides. I don’t decide on behalf of NRM. I decide with the NRM,” Museveni said in an interview with KTN News.
He however says that when the time comes for elections and Muhoozi shows interest in leadership, he will be audited by the citizens of the country including the things he has been tweeting about like the controversial ones that targeted Nairobi and Kenya in general.
“Ugandan leaders are not elected by Twitter. They are elected by the people. So if anybody has got interest in leadership, when the time comes they will be audited. Whatever he was saying will be part of the audit. If they find him a ‘ticking time-bomb’, they will make their decision,” Museveni said adding that his son will stop making controversial posts on the social media app following a discussion they had.
Museveni faulted his son’s tweets on invading Kenya saying that he should not have tweeted about such topics.
“Tweeting is now a modern method. The issue is what you tweet about. If he was tweeting on sports and things which are not controversial, that would not be a problem but to talk about other countries and partisan politics of Uganda is what he should not do and will not do,” the leader noted.
He further defended his move to promote Muhoozi after his controversial tweets saying that he is a good officer in the army and there is no need to reprimand him because of the small mistake.
“Muhoozi is a good general despite problems facing armies. Many of the armies are killed by corruption, stealing resources of the army, poor training. So if someone is good in something and makes mistake in something else how do you handle it? You may not get people 100% correct,” he said.
