Dr. James Muriithi Gakara who is specialized in treating pregnant women killed his own two children and attempted to take own life at his affluent Milimani apartment in Nakuru.
Gakara, who is an obstetrician at Optimum Current Hospital in Nakuru, injected his two children with a killer substance that took their lives on the spot.
The lifeless bodies of the children aged 3 and 5 were found by detectives lying on their bed, with foam oozing from their mouths.
Dr. Gakara was also found lying on his bed, though he was still alive. He was rushed to Nakuru level five hospital where he was admitted and is currently in stable condition.
Nakuru County Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri confirmed the unfortunate incident saying police were alerted by neighbors who heard commotion at Gakara’s house.
“We received a tip-off from the public that there was a commotion in a nearby house along Kilimani area. We immediately dashed to the scene and found the lifeless bodies of the two children in the house. Their father was still breathing,” Police boss Kiraguri said.
The neighbors had become suspicious after the doctor locked himself up with the children which they found unusual. They immediately alerted detectives who rushed to the apartment and forced their way inside, since the door had been latched and no response was forthcoming.
It’s believed that Dr. Gakara injected his two children with insulin before turning to himself, but the effect of the insulin was slow on him.
Assorted drugs, used syringes and a sharp kitchen knife were recovered at the horrific scene of the murder, an indication that the two angels had been injected with a lethal substance prior to their death.
Police moved the bodies of the two children to Nakuru Municipal mortuary as they wait to interrogate Dr. Gakara.
The suspect is awaiting questioning soon as he gets better, to answer to murder and misdemeanor charges.
In Kenya, attempted suicide is against Chapter 63, section 226 of the Penal Code, which stipulates that any person who attempts to kill themselves are guilty of a misdemeanor.
The penalty for attempted suicide is up to two years in prison or a fine or both. For premeditated murder, Dr. Gakara is looking at a long prison sentence.
