Mathioya Women Sacco officials have denied claims that they are part of organizers of a fundraising event expected to be graced by Deputy President William Ruto on Friday.
The officials together with the county cooperative department noted that they learned of the said fundraiser through posters circulating on social media.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Sacco chairperson Adijah Mwangi said those behind the fundraiser are not their members.
“I want to inform our members that the fundraising event is not ours and we are not aware of the occasion expected to be graced by Deputy President Ruto,” Ms. Mwangi said.
According to the county chief officer for cooperatives, Bernard Wanyoike, they did not receive any information from the Sacco about the event.
Wanyoike pointed out that for a Sacco to hold a fundraiser, it must first seek permission from delegates through the Annual General Meeting (AGM or a special AGM.
According to him, Saccos are financial institutions guided by-laws therefore a Harambee cannot be held without the approval of the delegates.

“Saccos are structured organizations that are governed by by-laws to protect the societies from outside influence. If there are welfare groups organizing fundraising events then they can do one but not misuse the name of a Sacco,” he added.
He also noted that many Saccos have collapsed after being influenced by the political class.
“Murang’a is known for many cooperative societies but some have collapsed after their members got involved in politics,” he said.
DP William Ruto is expected to preside over a fundraiser for Mathioya group as well as Kangema Boda Boda Sacco.
