MPs Pick 11 Members to Determine Linturi’s Fate After Impeachment

A National Assembly Select Committee of 11 Members will decide the fate of Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary  Mithika Linturi following a resolution of the House at a special sitting on Thursday morning, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetangula.

Out of a total 188 legislators that voted, 149 voted in favour of the motion, 36 against, while 3 MPs abstained from voting.

The Committee will consist of six members from the Majority Coalition, four from the Minority Coalition and one from Jubilee Party; which was recently declared a Parliamentary Party in the House.

The adopted a Motion for the nomination of the 11 Members to the Committee, namely; Majority Party Chief Whip Hon. Waomi Waqo (Marsabit County), Leader of the Minority Party Hon. Robert MBui (Kathiani), Hon. Rachael Nyamai (Kitui South), Hon. Samuel Chepkong (Aionabkoi), Hon. Gitonga MUrungara (Tharaka) as well as Hon. Tom Kakwang (Ruaraka).

Others are Hon. Malulu Injendi (Malava), Hon. NJeri Maina (Kirinyaga County), Hon. Kassim Tandaza(Matuga), Hon. Catherine Omanyo (Busia County) and Hon. Yusuf Farah (Wajir West).
“The select committee shall within 10 days report to the National Assembly whether it finds the allegations against the Cabinet Secretary to be substantiated,” said Hon. Wetangula.

The Motion for the proposed removal of the CS was moved by Bumula MP, Hon. Nelson Wamboka, on the grounds of alleged gross misconduct, gross violation of the Constitution and reasons to believe the CS has committed a crime under National Law.

“The Committee will be involved in quasi judicial proceedings, in this regard, it must operate within the requirements of the Constitution, relevant statutes and the provisions of the standing orders”, stated Speaker Wetang’ula while guiding the House

The Select Committee is expected to submit its Report to the House on the 13th May, 2024. There after, the Speaker of the National Assembly shall shall summon the House for a special sitting for the tabling of the report.
