Mpeleke Utoto Nyumbani- GSU Officers Who Threatened Kenyans Chased After Seeing Hell On Earth At Magadi Camp

Date:

Twenty-three General Service Unit (GSU) officers who were caught on camera sometime last year threatening Kenyans with irresponsible and reckless remarks have finally been punished convincingly.

The move to send these GSU officers on leave comes in the wake of completion of their three month retraining course at a training camp in Magadi, Kajiado County.

In a video that went viral in social media, the GSU officers who were celebrating after the pass out parade could be heard warning Kenyans that they were coming out to deal with them.

“Mmmeishaa..tutawamaliza…sisi ndio wale wasee…hapana tambua…tunakuja inje…sisi ndio wa pa pa pa,” the recruits said.

The video caused an uproar online, with netizens calling upon the National Police Service (NPS) to take action against the officers.

In a statement, NPS termed the remarks as irresponsible and reckless and that the behavior they portrayed did not represent the values of police services.

“Attention of the NPS is drawn to a video clip circulating on social media depicting newly graduated GSU officers recording themselves as they make some irresponsible and reckless remarks. We wish to clarify and assure the public that the behavior portrayed in the clip is not acceptable and does not reflect the values of the GSU, KPS and the NPS.

“All graduands went through a rigorous value-based training modelled on democratic policing principles and designed to make them responsive and responsible officers of the law at the service of citizens,” the statement further read.

NPS added that the remarks were regrettable but an internal review would be conducted so that measures are taken regarding the incident.

“The oath of allegiance they took as part of their graduation is a testament to the sanctity of their duty to service. The remarks as made in the clip are therefore regrettable and stand condemned. An internal review is ongoing with a view of preferring appropriate measures regarding the incident. GSU is renowned for its focused training aimed at producing highly disciplined and responsible officers,” NPS said.

2,502 members were incorporated into the service during the 48th pass out parade at the National Police College Embakasi B Campus that particular day.

It is alleged that most GSU officers fear the Magadi camp which has been described as hell on earth. Officers undergo training at the camp test for endurance within the disciplined forces.

On his side, police  Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said that the officers were just excited because of their first day in service but no assumptions concerning the incident were being made.

“Of course we understand these are young officers who are full of excitement for their first day of service. It was a big day also in terms of the chief guest present but there must be a review of what happened. We can’t make assumptions,” Shioso said in an interview with the Nation.
