Mount Kenya University soon will be in cash trouble

Date:

Mount Kenya University (MKU) is among the top institutions in the country bound to lose the government-sponsored placements.
A member of the Education Committee said yesterday that the government through parliament has initiated a move that will see the university, alongside Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) and Daystar University, among the private universities in the country lined to lose the disbursement of billions of shillings through the programme many say was initiated by bigwigs in the country’s education system.
“This one has to go and we shall be investigating the criteria under which the universities, including a private business entity like Mount Kenya University was awarded that big number of students under State capitation,” says the MP.
The placement spells doom for the private universities that have been relying on the government to stay afloat amid financial turmoil in the Public Universities.
:The State Department for Higher Education and Research through the KUCCPS should not place new government sponsoted students in private universities,” says the MP from Western Region.
The policy to admit private student was introduced in 2016 and many believe that MKU founder Simon Gicharu used his influence within the political system to win the back and capitation consideration.
So far, the private universities have received Sh9 billion from the National Treasury.
On 2020, MKU received the highest number of State sponsored students.
MKU,with a capacity 4,995 students received 2,247 students followed by Kabarak (3,300) and got 2,181 places.
