A family from Nairobi’s Jericho has been left in a puzzle following the disappearance of their 21-year old son last month.
Trevor Ndwiga Nyaga who is also known as Idriss Jamal after converting to Islam in 2017 is said to have gone missing after leaving their home in September 3.
He was last seen by friends and neighbors on September 4 and 5 and since then, his phones have been switched off.
His family filed a missing person report under the OB Number 36/06/09/2021.
His mother Diana Nyaga has however blamed the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) for Trevor’s disappearance. Diana told The Star newspaper that she was informed on Wednesday that her son’s phone signals were detected in Wajir and that there was a CCTV footage showing him boarding a bus to town five days after he went missing.
The police further informed her that Trevor’s phones were switched off at their home in Jericho.
But what she gathered from her son’s friends and neighbors contradicts the police report.
“I personally spoke to him on fourth on his phone that according to the ATPU was off. Again, I have spoken to five different people who saw my son on the Sunday, September 5, in Nairobi. So what Wajir are they talking about?” Diana asked.
She also claimed that ATPU failed to show her the CCTV footage of her son boarding a bus.
“I believe they want to sustain the narrative that my son has crossed to Somalia. They are holding him, either to later kill him and dump his body in Tana River or elsewhere,” the mother of two said.
Diana revealed that she noticed change in Trevor’s attitude after he converted to Islam. He became a staunch follower of the faith and began listening to and watching the teachings of the deceased fiery Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo, among others.
She added that her son also read the Jihad literature and threatened to cross to Somalia.
At that point she was scared and informed ATPU, a decision she now regrets
“I approached the police to help me see if he had a problem and help him. But it is the biggest mistake of my life. I deeply regret it. I wish I would have let him cross to Somalia and do whatever he wanted there, at least I would be peaceful because I’d be knowing where he is,” Diana said.
ATPU says that the young man crossed to Somalia however his mother believes that they are holding him because he has refused to admit to what they wanted and to also give information.
Trevor was arrested in March 2019 and released but was rearrested in November the same year after being suspected of having intentions to bomb a church.
He was charged in December and remanded at Kamiti prison. His family managed to get him out of prison in September last year after paying a surety of Kshs2million. The case is still ongoing.
