The mother of rogue cop Benson Imbati has painted a completely different picture of her son who shot and killed six people in Kabete.
Constable Imbasi went on a killing spree early Tuesday morning December 7th shooting dead six people in Kabete, Kiambu county before turning the gun on himself.
Imbasi – a police Constable based at Kabete Police Station – shot dead his wife and five other boda boda riders before turning the gun on himself on Tuesday around 2:00 am.
Imbasi’s mother spoke to the media for the first time since the tragic incident in Kangemi which made headlines in Kenya and beyond.
The grieving mother said that Imbasi was her only child who didn’t get into much trouble unlike his brothers who often got into trouble.
For her, Imbasi was the source of her peace. She said that she still doesn’t believe that he did what people claim he did.
“I don’t believe that he did this. He is my second born and among all of my children, he was one of the most quiet child who didn’t give me trouble, when he was young he gave me peace. I remember when his brothers were getting in trouble, he was always studying and quiet an this is the reason why I didn’t think he could do this. At first, my youngest son called me and told me thinks were not okay. He refused to tell me what had happened until I saw it for myself and honestly I still don’t believe it,” she said.
According to Daily Nation, the owner of the building where Imbatu began his shooting spree said the policeman arrived home a few minutes past midnight in the company of Carol and another officer.
“He dropped her at the apartment and thereafter took his colleague home. Several minutes later, he returned and demanded that he parks his vehicle inside the compound. The night guards told him that the parking slots were fully occupied. He got angry and told the guards to ‘create space for me inside, or else I shoot you dead.’”
“It took a lot of convincing to make him park the car outside the compound. After parking his car, he stormed into the apartment. He was visibly angry. Minutes later, the guards said they heard a gunshot from one of the houses. Upon rushing to the scene, they found fire had started engulfing Imbatu’s house and the body of his girlfriend was on the floor.” Said the landlord who wanted his identity to remain private.
Feeling guilty, constable Benson Imbatu left the house but he was not lucky since the gunshots had already attracted the neighbors including the boda boda riders who were within the Kabete area.
Without knowing how lethal and armed the killer officer based at Kabete was, the boda boda riders started pursuing him and on catching up with him, they started questioning him why he was running away.
