Ugandan Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, has refuted calls to create another border point to reduce the congestion being experienced at the Busia-based transit center.
Speaking to reporters at the Uganda Media Media Center in Kampala on Wednesday, Wamala said the issues causing congestion at the border will be soon sorted.
He noted that the biggest problem at the border has been the requirement that is required to be tested of Covid-19 which in return creates traffic congestion.
“Congestion at the border…this is a matter which has been with us for some time. We have been moving back-and-forth. It has been mainly because of testing of truck drivers for COVID-19,” he said.

The minister noted that there was a point when both Kenya and Uganda had an agreement that if a driver tested in Kenya, then there would not be any further testing at the border but that had to be crapped off after disagreement arose between the two East African nations.
“This what has brought the congestion. It is not an intended thing. The solution is not finding another border point because we already have two points of Busia and Malaba. There is also Lwakaka. But we will sort this out once we have fine-tuned on the issue of testing drivers and what test results are allowed cross border,” Mawala said.
