Nairobi Women Rep hopeful Millicent Omanga has found herself on the wrong side of the law after her furniture and household goods business dubbed Milways enterprises was implicated in a corruption deal involving Kshs 4.8 billion.
Omanga and several other companies as well as individuals may be prosecuted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for conspiring to defraud taxpayers Kshs 4.8 billion by engaging in dubious contracts that were awarded by the Kenya Prison Service.
According to a report by a local daily, Milways enterprise secured a contract to supply the prison service with gun slings at a cost of Kshs200 million in 2019, when EACC began scrutinizing tenders that had been presented by various government institutions with the investigations blocking release of any funds.
The Kenya Prison Service had already agreed to pay suppliers 80% of the total money they were required to receive once goods were supplied, however there was no assurance of delivery of the weapons and other security equipment.
The contract awarded to Omanga was however redundant since guns are fitted with slings during manufacturing.
Investigations into the matter are still ongoing and could see the nominated senator get prosecuted along with several Kenya prison Service for conspiring to steal taxpayers money.
When contacted to explain how she won the contract, Omanga maintained that she was not aware of what the caller was talking about, insisting that they had reached out to the wrong person.
EACC got wind of the dubious contracts at Kenya Prison Service after whistleblowers leaked the information to the commission.
Omanga registered her Milways company in February 2009 and it has been among the things that have seen her succeed financially.
The business allegedly operates from Development Towers situated along Biashara street in Nairobi.
