Mike Sonko: I Want Chief Justice Martha Koome to Jail Herself For 6 Months

Date:

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has taken a swipe at Chief Justice Martha Koome over what he termed as defying her own laws.

Sonko accused Koome of making remarks about impeached governors and leaders publicly contrary to the constitution yet his impeachment petition was before the Supreme Court.

According to him, Koome’s remarks contributed to the dismissal of his petition, that sought to overturn his impeachment as Nairobi governor, by the Supreme Court.

“The chief Justice had already pronounced herself that any impeached governor or convicted leader is not supposed to vie unless that impeachment or conviction is overturned which was wrong. She went to the media and pronounced that which is wrong  because she was defying the constitution.

“Article 193 does not support the chief justice’s sentiments. We had all the reasons to want the CJ to recuse herself(form the hearing and ruling of his petition). She is not independent and she is not competent in the fact that she misled 40 million Kenyans by lying to them,” Sonko said in an interview with a local TV station on Thursday evening.

Sonko added that Koome was responsible for the rule barring any Kenyan to comment on an active matter in court yet she broke the rule herself.

“In the BBI petition where she was the presiding judge she made some comments and actually she gazetted some supreme rules that no lawyer or Kenyan is supposed to comment on any active matter before court. But in this scenario the CJ commented on a matter that was active before her on court, she defied her own order, we want her to sentence herself 6 months Imprisonment for defying her own directive. She was not supposed to make those remarks, ” Sonko argued.

He went on to reveal that CJ Koome has been sued by Omwaza Advocates over the issue.
