A day after President William Ruto announced that the country would not experience El Nino, the Kenya Meteorological Department (MET) issued a weather update for the next seven days.
According to the weatherman, rainfall will continue throughout the country from Tuesday, October 24 to Monday, October 30. Kenya MET however did not reveal the intensity of the rainfall.
Further update indicated that isolated storms are likely to occur in some areas including the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and North-eastern Kenya.
“High average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30°C are expected over several parts of the country including the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” Kenya MET stated.
“A few areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time (minimum) temperatures of less than 10°C,” it added.
The statement did not contradict President Ruto’s announcement of no El Nino. Speaking during a church service, the Head of State assured the country that the rainfall would cause distraction as earlier predicted.
He announced that the rains will help farmers plant and harvest increasing the country’s food basket.
” You heard the news that we would experience El Nino that will destroy places and property. But who is God? You’ve heard they have said we won’t have El Nino,” Ruto stated.
The department has instead said that there will be rain but not to an extent of destruction, we will only have significant rains. We thank God. And with the rains that will come, we have planned ourselves and prepared our farmers so that we have another harvest,” he added.
The Met department had warned that El Nino will hit the country from mid-October to December.
This forced the national government and county governments to start early preparations for the heavy rains.
