Kawira Mwangaza, the governor of Meru County, has been impeached.
Mwangaza, who won the election on an Independent ticket, became the first female governor of the Meru region.
On August 9, 2022, Mwangaza won the governor’s race with 209,158 votes against Murungi’s 110,850.
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party candidate Mithika Linturi obtained 183, 859 votes. President William Ruto’s government appointed Linturi to the position of Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.
Mwangaza had a disagreement with MCAs shortly after taking office in August, accusing them of trying to blackmail her over the ward development budget.
On the other hand, the ward representatives described Mwangaza as militant who disregarded their requests for consultations in the county’s affairs.
67 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who were present in the House today, 14 December 2022, overwhelmingly decided to remove her from office due to allegations of nepotism, unauthorized hiring and firing, deceptive campaigns against other leaders, and flagrant Constitutional violations.
The motion now advances to the Senate, where senators will vote on whether to uphold or reverse the county assembly’s decision, now that she has been impeached.
