DCI has reported that the mastermind behind the shocking serial killings of women in Mawanga area of Nakuru county has finally been arrested
Evans Michori Kebwaro was arrested on Thursday afternoon in Kisii where he had gone into hiding after a manhunt for him was launched by detectives from the Elite Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau augmented by their Special Services Unit.
The experienced killer had managed to cover his tracks giving local police a hard time to arrest him.
Following his arrest, Kebwaro revealed five of his accomplices namely Julius Otieno, 27, Josephat Simiyu, 24, Dennis Mmbolo 25, Isaac Kinyanjui, 18 and Makhoha Wanjala, 25, “all of whom have been rounded up in a stealth operation conducted this morning in Nakuru, by a specialized team of detectives. “
Detectives have since established that Kebwaro is a jailbird “with a criminal past, who has previously been convicted and served sentences in prison.”Â
“The arrest of the main suspect and his gang comes barely 24 hours after a high-powered security meeting that was held in Nakuru led by the cabinet secretary for Interior Dr. Fred Matiang’i, following a presidential order,” DCI noted.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Kebwaro, is responsible for at least 3 murders committed within Mawanga area and its environs, which followed a similar modus operandi and were reported at Kiugoine police station between June 15 and June 24 this year.
The crimes were committed in broad daylight with bodies of the murdered women being found burnt in bedrooms.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the bloodthirsty killer would first rape the victims before strangling them and setting their lifeless bodies on fire under a heap of clothes,” DCI said.
The first incident occurred on June 14 whereby a 20-year old woman identified as Grace Wanjiku was found burnt beyond recognition under a heap of beddings in a house that had been razed down by a huge fire.
“Attempts by first responders to extinguish the fire proved futile, until fire engines from Nakuru City County arrived,” DCI report further read.
A week later, a middle aged woman identified as Susan Wambui was found dead in a similar manner. The neighbors managed to put out the fire and rescued her three year old child. The incident occurred at around 4 pm.
Wambui’s death was followed by that of 23-year old Diana Opicho which sparked an online rage and protests from Nakuru residents who called for immediate action.
DCI further said that Kebwaro has confessed to have murdered 7 people in cold blood. He has since been placed in three scenes of murder crimes.
“Meanwhile, the six thugs are currently being transported to DCI headquarters for a more comprehensive forensic examination at the DCI National Forensic laboratory, before a detailed report is released to the public,” the report stated.
