Kenya Kwanza Alliance has taken over the country’s leadership after the swearing in of William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
A number of politicians, government officials and well known citizens are however turning their backs on social media as Kenya turns a new leaf.
On Tuesday outgoing Cabinet Secretary for Interior Fred Matiang’i deactivated his official Twitter account after Ruto was sworn in. Netizens discovered that Matiang’i was not on twitter as they attempted to tag him in a bid to taunt him as Ruto ascended to power.
Matiang’i quit the social media app without notice but he had been using it for official communication on matters surrounding his ministry. He had acquired 1.3m followers since joining in 2013.
Another popular person who dumped twitter is Raila Odinga’s youngest daughter Winnie, who earlier claimed that the account had been hacked. She had over 80,000 followers.
Winnie was facing trolls over an altercation with Odinga’s loyalists which could have resulted from the hacking. She was also being trolled because she had last year claimed that she will have her wedding at the statehouse but that will not happen because Ruto is the new occupant of the Statehouse.
Former Gatundu MP Moses Kuria is also leaving social media, claiming that his objective to have Ruto as president has been achieved. Kuria is among those who lost in the general elections.
“My objective has been achieved. My good friend William Ruto is the 5th President of the Republic of Kenya. This account will be permanently deleted on Wednesday 14th September, 2022 at 18:00 hours. It was great interaction guys. Adios !” he said both on Twitter and Facebook where he has 335.9K followers and 794K followers respectively.
These are however not the first popular persons to quit social media especially Twitter. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta once admitted that he quit Twitter because of the never ending trolls.
