The man who led other villagers in Mwingi, Kitui to capture the three fugitives who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison has narrated the encounter.
Paul Mulati said that the fugitives were spotted at Endau Malani ward but they did not understand how they managed to reach the area.
“Wanatembea kando ya msitu lakini hawaachi barabara mbali ndio wasipotee…hawajui, ni wageni…hawa watu wamejulikana wakati wameingia Endau Malalani ward, sasa hatujui walifika aje Endau…hatujui walibebwa na gari ama walikuja namna gani.(They were walking beside the bushes but they would not leave the road so that they don’t get lost because they are strangers here, they were identified when they entered Endau Malani, but we do not know how they reached Endau. We are not sure if they used a vehicle).” Mulati narrated.
According to Mulati, they were able to identify the fugitives because of how they behaved as they walked on towards their destination. He said that they were moving in a zigzag formation beside the bushes and closer to the road. They would occasionally cross to the other side of the road.
“Walikuwa na ujanja ingine kwa sababu walikuwa wanaenda zig zag…mara wanavuka barabara wanaenda pande hii…wanatembea kwa msitu, wakiona hiyo msitu imeshikana sana wanaruka tena wanaenda pande hiyo ingine ya barabara. (They were cunning because they would move in a zigzag manner, they would cross the road to the other side, walk in the bushes, when they see that the bushes are thick, they would skip to the other side of the road), ” he said.
Mulati added that they did not fear to pursue the fugitives because they were aware that they were unarmed.
“Sisi kama wananchi wazalendo wa nchi ya Kenya, tumefanya juu chini mpaka tukawakamata, hatukuwa tunaogopa…ile kitu tulikuwa tunaogopa zaidi ni vita kutoka nje, si hao, kwa sababu wakati walitoroka tuliona hawana silaha.(As patriotic Kenyans we have tried our best to capture them. We did not fear, what we feared the most was were from outside the country but not them because when they escaped we saw they were not armed),” he stated.
Mulati however hoped that the government will fulfill its promise on the Kshs60 million reward.
After the three fugitives escaped on Monday, DCI released a statement saying it will give the reward to anyone who will volunteer information that will lead to their arrest.
