Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was released on Sunday night September 17 following his kidnapping ordeal in Banana, Kiambu County,
Speaking to the Standard, Maina Njenga stated that his car was intercepted as he was driving from Banana to Nairobi with his aide. They were pulled out and bangled into another car by men in hoodies and heavily armed.
“They took my mobile phone and drove us at a high speed. I did not know where we were going until one of them told me we were in Naivasha,” Njenga told the Standard.
“I was scared and knew this was my last day on Earth. But they (abductors) were good people. They did not harm us,” he narrated.
According to Maina Njenga, he was locked in an iron sheet house where he was interrogated for over 12 hours. He was also questioned on his interactions with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“At around 8pm, they put us in the trunk of a Subaru and drove us to Limuru town. They ordered us out of the vehicle and left,” he stated.
After being dropped, he used a friend’s phone to contact his family.
He alleged that the abduction was meant to make him skip a court session set for Monday, September 18, where he is facing a pending criminal matter at Makadara Law Courts.
The Azimio La Umoja Coalition had claimed that the alleged abduction of the former Mungiki leader was part of the ongoing targeting and intimidation of opposition leaders by Kenya Kwanza.
“This is a deliberate attempt to distract Kenyans from the pressing issues such as the rising cost of fuel and food. We vehemently condemn the abduction and continued persecution of Mr. Maina and his family,” the opposition stated.
Azimio has demanded the release of Maina, and his production in court, stating that the alleged abduction was carried out by rogue police.
“The abductors were driving Subarus, armed, and hooded. It is highly likely that they were part of the Special Support Unit, known for terrorizing Kenyans during the anti-tax protests,” they claimed.
