LSK President Faith Odhiambo is calling for investigations after Wanjeri Kariuki, a Mediamax journalist who was shot by police in July while covering protests, revealed that she had received death threats.
In a post she shared on X, Odhiambo noted that victims of police brutality and media should not be intimidated.
“This should be investigated, the media should not be intimidated especially a victim of police brutality!” the LSK president tweeted.
While speaking to K24, a mediamax-owned station, Wanjeri said that the threats she receiving are aimed at making her drop the case against the police who shot her.
She added that she was now living in fear and also feared for the safety of her family.
“The person’s intention might be to make me drop the case because as a human being being especially as woman, I will be afraid. If a man calls me threatening me, I will be afraid to leave the house and I am living alone.
“Secondly am worried about my family. If that person can’t reach me, he can go after my family incase he knows there whereabouts. I’m so worried,” she said.
Wanjeri said she has contemplated dropping the case because of the threats but she doesn’t want to let down those who have stood by her since the shooting incident.
“I have contemplated leaving the case so that the person can stop pursuing me but the back up I have received from the Nakuru Journalists Association, they have been pushing the case as I recuperated in hospital, they are the ones who have been following up with IPOA.
“As an individual, I had focused on healing but if I drop the case, I would be letting down those who have been holding me. We know the case is known and has a lot of weight,” Wanjeri said.
