In Africa, there are more than a thousand universities offering different higher learning  programmes ranging from medicine, Education, computing, engineering among others.

More universities continue to sprout especially because of the high number of people seeking higher learning which is a key  level of education in the current era.

In as much as all the institutions are offering higher learning programmes, they differ in a number of things including academic excellence, structure and particular type of courses offered among other things.

Today we have a look at the top 10 universities  that have excellent academic performance according to US News ranking.

1.University of Cape town

This is ranked as the best university in Africa . Globally, the institution holds the 109th position with 70 points. It is known for academic excellence as well as its commitment to social change and development.

The university is located at Cape Town, South Africa and was founded in 1829 thus making it the oldest university in the country as well as the oldest existing university in sub-Saharan Africa.

The institution has 6 branches. It offers courses in degrees, Masters, PhDs among others levels. It has 6 faculties  namely; Law, Humanities, Science, Commerce, Engineering and Health sciences with 57 departments. The institution accommodates both local and foreign students and its motto is simply “Good hope”.

  1. University of Witwatersrand

The university is second best in Africa and comes at 212th position globally with a global score of 63.2 points. The institution is located in Johannesburg, South Africa and has various branches.

It is known for research and awards in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and offers up to 3600 courses.

The institution was founded in 1896 and the great hero Nelson Mandela is one of its alumni. 

Faculties at the institution include Health sciences, Commerce, law and  Management, Engineering and built environment, Humanities and Sciences.

The motto of the institution is “Inspiring Greatness.” It has  four colleges namely; College of Agriculture and Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities and Law and Management Studies.

  1. University of Cairo.

The Egyptian university breaks the monotony of South Africa institutions and comes at number 5 in Africa and  392 worldwide with 55.8 points.

The institution was established in 1908 and has over 20 faculties and institutes including School of medicine, Law, Engineering, Pharmacy, Agriculture among others.

  1. University of Johannesburg

Located in South Africa, the institution is ranked 471 globally. It is a famous research hub in South Africa.

The institution was established in 2005 when Rand Afrikaans University, the Technikon Witwatersrand, and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University were merged.

Faculties at the institution include; Art, Design and Architecture, College of Business and economics, Education, Engineering and Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Sciences.

  1. University of Ibadan

The Nigerian university is ranked at the 425th position worldwide and 7th in Africa with 54.9 points.

The institution became a fully fledged university in 1962 after its founding in 1948. The institution’s motto is “To think straight is the fount of knowledge.” 

Faculties at the institution include Agriculture and Forestry, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry, Education and Law.

Others are Pharmacy, Public Health, Science, Technology, The Social Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental Design and Management and Economics.

  1. University of Pretoria

The institution is based in South Africa. It comes in 434th position with 54.8 points. It  was founded in 1908.

The institution’s motto is; “With zeal and perseverance, strive towards the goal.” It offers over 1800 programmes. The university has 9 faculties and a “home to business school.”

Courses at the institution are offered in English and Afrikaans languages.

  1. Mansoura University.

The University is located in the Nile Delta, middle of Egypt. It is ranked at 477th position in the world and 9 best in Africa with 53.1 points.

It was established in 1972 and was first known as East Delta University. The institution acquired the Mansoura name in 1973.

Being one of the largest institutions in the country, it has contributed to Egypt’s cultural and scientific life. It is very competitive since students are required to meet certain standards of grades before being admitted.

It has over 10 faculties ranging from Computing, Engineering, Commerce, Science among others.

  1. Northwest University- South Africa

This is another University in South Africa that wraps up the top ten best performing universities in Africa. 

It is ranked 510th globally with  51.7 points. and comes number six among the best universities in South Africa.

The institution came into existence in 2004 following the merger of  Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of Bophuthatswana.

The university is known for excelling in economic and management Sciences, business and governance, industrial psychology, and tourism.
