DCI sleuths arrested 11 suspects in connection to a Sh1 billion gold deal that ultimately failed to materialize.
On September 13, 2023, Nairobi Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe ordered the release of these 11 suspects, citing a lack of compelling reasons to warrant their continued detention.
The failed gold deal had initially sparked a flurry of investigations, resulting in the arrest of Mr. Festo Wamanyi, a DCI officer stationed in Kitui, along with ten others. These individuals were subsequently granted bail, with Mr. Wamanyi securing his release on a Sh100,000 cash bail, while the remaining ten suspects were released on Sh20,000 cash bail each. These suspects included David Misiko, Lenace Wakachuka, Rahma Hassan, Joseph Gikonyo, Stephen Andere, Alice Kavata, Flevian Omwoyo, Ian Wekesa, Duncan Muchai, and Suleiman Nanji.
However, the story takes a twist as two foreign nationals, Nelson Fru Che and Ronald Nelson from Cameroon, who were implicated in the same deal, remain in police custody as of September 13, 2023. They are considered flight risks due to their foreign nationality and were reportedly found in possession of a firearm and ammunition without the necessary licenses. Additionally, the police allege that the two foreigners were in possession of forged banknotes, further complicating their legal situation.
The suspects’ arrest was connected to a plot to defraud a Tunisian national of Sh1 billion in a counterfeit gold scheme. The investigation revealed that Mr. Joseph Waswa had communicated with the foreigner, informing them that a consignment of gold valued at Sh1 billion was being held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
This information prompted the complainant to make the decision to visit Kenya with the intention of engaging in the gold business upon the release of the supposed gold.
While the 11 Kenyan suspects have been granted bail and released from custody, the fate of the two foreign nationals, Nelson Fru Che and Ronald Nelson, remains uncertain.
The case continues to unfold, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the alleged fake gold deal and ensure that justice is served.
