More details surrounding the death of lawyer Paul Gicheru, who was facing witness interference charges at ICC, have emerged.
Following a post mortem that was conducted on September 30, the lawyer was not poisoned as it had been widely speculated.
According to the family’s lawyer John Kaminiwa, further investigations will establish the exact cause of his death
“Investigators have ruled out poison, we wait now for inquest to hear what will be said. There are other tests to be carried out but poison has been ruled out,” Khaminiwa told reporters.
He further noted that Gicheru was diabetic while recounting events of the day the ICC suspect met his death.
“According to the wife, Gicheru suffered from diabetes. When he went to bed after eating, and when the wife went to check on him she found that he was not in good condition, subsequently, he died. Under the law, there will be an inquest where we can hear more,” he said.
Khaminiwa also said that Gicheru’s son, who also collapsed and rushed to hospital on the fateful day, lost consciousness due to the shock of losing his father. The lawyer is positive that the deceased’s death was natural.
“So far as I am concerned the case is almost concluded that it was a natural death and not poison,” he said.
Gicheru was facing witness interference charges at ICC with regards to the collapsed case against President William Ruto on crimes against humanity.
He died on September 26, shortly after hosting his father in law. He was laid to rest in Nakuru on Thursday last week.
