Kenya’s Nelly Cheboi, is the newest CNN hero.
Cheboi was a diligent student, and in 2012 she was awarded a full scholarship at Augustana College in Illinois.
Through the charity organization TechLit Africa, founded by Nelly Cheboi, thousands of children in rural Kenya now have access to donated, refurbished computers, giving them the opportunity for a better future.
“I feel so accomplished seeing kids that are 7 years old touch-typing, knowing that I just learned how to touch-type less than five years ago,” says Nelly.
Out of ten other nominees, Cheboi, who left a prestigious software engineering career in Chicago in 2019 to build computer laboratories for Kenyan kids, was named the winner.
Nelly Cheboi, a Kenyan, received the honor for her work procuring computers for students in her town through her business TechLit Africa.
To support the CNN hero in her efforts, Ksh 12.3 million will be given to her. Along with the other top 10 heroes, she will also receive Ksh 1.23 million in cash, grants, organization training, and assistance from the Elevate Prize Foundation.
Nelly will also receive the Elevate Prize, which entitles her to a $300,000 (Sh37 million) gift as well as an additional $200,000 (Sh24.6 million) in support for her charitable endeavors.
