Kenyans and Africans in General have been saddened by the death of Congolese rhumba/Lingala star Lulendo Matumona alias General Defao.
Defao died on Monday December 27 while admitted at Laquintinie Hospital in Douala, Cameroon. He died a few days before turning 63 years old.Â
According to reports, the Bana Congo singer had been scheduled to perform in a private concert before his death.
His family and friends said that hours before the concert, Defao was seized with uneasiness while in his room.
He was almost in a coma for long hours before it was established that he was in a bad state late at night. He immediately rushed to the hospital.
The cause of his death has not yet been revealed but his family says his health was declining.
Following his death, several Congolese artists including Fally Ipupa and Ferre Gola have condoled with his family.
Kenyans have also mourned the musician with some saying they will miss his music and dance moves as they thanked him for entertaining them.
Musician Suzanna Owiyo said, “Kenya was home. Thank you for the Music. RIP General.”
“General Defao takes a bow.Continue dancing Matumona. Defao was one of the few artists you could lock in the studio and they’d come out with a hit in less than half a day,” Judy Atieno wrote.
“One of my favorite Congolese musicians, General Defao has passed on in Cameroon. His hit song ANIMATION remains my favorite and one of the best in his music career. Rest in peace the king of Ndombolo,” Dennis Ouma’s tweet read.
Defao spend more than 15 years in exile in Kenya and only returned to his motherland on August 4, 2019 and the first thing he did was to give his last respect to the graves of Papa Wemba, Tabu Ley, King Kester Emeneya, Madilu System, Pépé Kalle.
