For a long time, lawyers had dominated the country’s political face but over time that has changed with more people from different fields becoming politicians.
Recent days have witnessed more journalists and media personalities giving a try in politics and here is a list of those who successfully joined politics and are having flourishing political careers.
Raphael Tuju
Raphael Tuju is currently a CS without portfolio. He is also the executive Director for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance.
He quit journalism in 2002 and vied for the Rarieda parliamentary seat which he won.
His career in journalism began in the 1980s. He produced commercials and documentaries for radio and TV. He also worked as a news anchor at KTN in the 1990s. Aside from that he was also a columnist for the Standard Newspaper.
Sabina ChegeÂ
The vocal lawmaker was recently interviewed for the running mate position for Azimio-OKA presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
She is the Woman Rep for Murang’a county, a position she has held since 2013.Â
Before politics, Chege was an actress and a radio presenter at Coro FM before shifting to Kameme FM.
Alfred MutuaÂ
Mutua has served as governor for Machakos for two terms. Before his current position, the politician was the government spokesperson, a position he quit in 2012 to join politics.
His career in journalism began while he was still in high school at the age of 15 years. His stories would get published in the Sunday Nation, The Standard and The Kenya Times.
At just 19 years old, he was a company owner, Golden Dreams Company, which published newspapers and magazines. In his university days, he worked for several American media houses and he Later he joined NTV as a reporter in 1997.Â
He has also produced various films, books and magazines
Granton Samboja
Samboja was elected as governor of Taita Taveta county in 2017 under a jubilee ticket.Â
Before that he was very successful in his journalism and media career. He worked for Royal Media services and his contributions to the company saw the rise of Citizen radio.
He later quit and started his own radio, Milele FM, but later sold it to Mediamax group.
Mohammed Ali
He is popular for the investigative piece Jicho Pevu that used to air at KTN. He was among the greatest investigative reporters that the country had before quitting from the Standard Media group to vie for the Nyali MP seat in 2017.
The politician is seeking to defend his seat under a UDA ticket come August 9.
Naisula Lesuuda
She is the MP of Samburu West and is serving her first term. She worked as a reporter for KBC and in 2017 she vied for the seat which she won.
Yussuf Hassan Abdi
Abdi is the sitting Member of Parliament for Kamkunji Constituency. He began his career at KBC when it was still known as Voice of Kenya where he worked as an announcer and producer. He later worked at BBC and Voice of America before joining politics in 2011.
