Two Kenyan journalists contributed to the expose dubbed The Pandora Papers that uncovered the billions of secret wealth owned by President Kenyatta’s family.
According to the expose by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), 35 current and former leaders have been involved in stealing public property before stashing them in billions that are hidden in offshore accounts.
The expose that was shared to over 650 journalists worldwide revealed that president Kenyatta together with six members of his family own a network of 13 offshore companies.
Africa Uncensored’s John Allan Namu and Purity Mukami of Finance Uncovered were mentioned among those who contributed to the report.
Namu went ahead to publish a video titled Pandora papers: Kenyatta’s secrets companies.
“With contributions from the awesome team at Finance Uncovered, we spent months looking through the #PandoraPapers and found companies linked to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Muhoho Kenyatta, Kristina Pratt and Nyokabi Muthama,” the journalist shared.
Namu has on a number occasions put his life and that of his family at risk due to his investigative duties which have forced him to go into hiding.
In a past interview, he revealed that he had to keep his children out of school and his wife lost her job when they went into hiding.
On the other hand, Purity Mukami is an investigative journalist who has learned under the wings of John Allan Namu.
She began her career as a statistics lecturer at various Kenyan universities, then as a banker and researcher before switching to investigative journalism.
Other leaders mentioned exposed include the king of Jordan, the prime minister of the Czech Republic, and President Uhuru’s fellow African leaders Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon and Denis Sassou-Nguesso of the Republic of Congo among others.
