Reigning world half marathon champion Sebastian Sawe clocked 58:23 to set a new course record in winning this year’s Prague Half Marathon held on 6 March.
The 29-year-old headed to the race as one of the favourites and he did not disappoint as he not only broke the record of 58:47 held by Atsedu Tsegay of Ethiopia but also set a new personal best (PB) time as he led Kenya to a clean podium sweep.
Fresh from a seventh-place finish at the just-concluded World Athletics cross-country championship, helping Kenya retain the senior men’s title, Sawe dominated the race, finishing more than a minute ahead of Geoffrey Toroitich (1:00:01) and Patrick Mosin (1:00:05).
In the women’s Ethiopia’s Gete Alemayehu denied Kenya’s Jesca Chelangat victory in a sprint finish with the winner clocking 1:08:10 to finish three seconds ahead of the Kenyan with Nigisti Haftu completing the top three places in 1:09:30.
