Kenya Railways has denied reports that travellers have opted for other transport alternatives following fare hike.
In a statement, Kenya Railways indicated that the travel capacity was still at its optimal.
The operator denounced social media claims alleging that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) was moving with empty seats.
This was after a photo went viral alleging that people had ditched SGR services due to fare hike.
“Kenya Railways has taken note of a picture doing its rounds on social media, of an empty coach indicating lack of passengers. We wish to state that this picture is in no way a representation of the actual status of the Madaraka Express Service and bookings for travel are going on as normal.
“We remain committed to serving our customers and will do all we can to ensure that rail continues to remain their preferred mode of transport, via the Madaraka Express Service,” Kenya Railways stated.
In January, SGR increased fare charges for it’s locomotives. From Nairobi to Mombasa, fare was hiked from Ksh1000 to Ksh1500.
Kenya Railways attributed the rise to increased fuel costs.
