Kenya Power announced power interruptions in 10 counties on Thursday, September 14.
In a notice, the utility firm noted that the power interruption was to allow for routine maintenance of its lines and systems.
According to the electricity transmitting company, power would be switched off in the affected areas from 9:00 a.m. to around 5:00 pm.
In Nairobi, the areas listed included Part of Riverside Drive, Joska Kamulu, the Thome area covering Mukuyu, Marurui Patrol Base, Marurui, and Quickmart Thome.
KPLC noted that Kiambu County would also be affected by the interruptions covering the Kabete, Kingeero, and Wangige areas.
Other areas such as Juja Farm, Murage, and Mukuyuini would also be affected by the shutdown.
Uasin Gishu was also included in the list of counties set to experience power interruptions for over eight hours on Thursday, September 14.
Other counties listed included Nyeri County, Trans Nzoia County, Meru, Murang’a County, Kirinyaga, Mombasa, and Kilifi.
The massive maintenance is poised to help Kenya Power assure users steady electricity supply during the expected heavy rain seasons.
Part of maintenance includes repairing faulty systems, replacing poles, fixing transformers, and disconnecting illegal connections.
According to the utility firm, the repairs are expected to prevent a nationwide blackout experienced early in September during El Nino.
El Nino expected to start in September is expected to cause flooding in some areas especially Nairobi.
To avert the crisis, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja unveiled a series of measures to address the anticipated adverse effects of the El Nino rains, as predicted by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Sakaja identified the poorly maintained and clogged drainage system as a primary contributor to potential problems.
He emphasized that the recently recruited environmental staff, numbering 3,500 young men and women, would play a crucial role in promptly clearing and maintaining drainage systems.
