The surprise visit to parliament that President William Ruto made on Wednesday has continued to elicit reactions from Kenyans as well as politicians.
Those from the Azimio side are convinced that Ruto’s visit has something to do with the much awaited ruling on who, between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza, is the majority team in the National Assembly. The ruling is expected to be delivered by speaker Moses Wetang’ula this Thursday.
Some have also argued that Ruto is out to have the parliament under his control.
Ruto’s allies have however refuted claims that he went to parliament to hand Wetang’ula a ruling on the majority team issue.
According to Nandi senator Samson Cherargei, the former Deputy President paid parliament a visit to remember his days as a lawmaker. Ruto served as MP from 1997-2007.
“Even if President William Ruto wanted speaker Moses Wetang’ula to do anything in terms of ruling, he should have called him to his office. You know Kenyans will imagine that he brought ruling because the senator of the city county said that. That is misleading. I was there, let me clarify to the country, after launching KTDA regulations on tea sector issues and market, he decided to remember his days as MP of Eldoret North,” he affirmed.
The senator added that most of the MPs who had lunch with Ruto were from Azimio side and they were happy and comfortable. He further said that it was very important for the head of state to engage with MPs.
“The fact that William Ruto can walk into parliament and engage parliamentarians is very important. Our former party leader Uhuru Kenyatta used to see elected leaders as irritants. He used to have disdain towards elected leaders but you have a president who is now willing to listen to elected leaders,” Cheragei said.
On the other hand, Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi said that Wetang’ula is a man of good reputation and can not be handed a ruling by the president.
“If you told any person in this country that Moses Wetang’ula is a person to be brought a ruling by hand by the president to read, you will be faulting the intelligence of many people. Wetang’ula is a renowned senior lawyer who has successfully handled big cases. Secondly, he is a legislator who has done superb work,” the governor said.
