After playing hide and seek with police since escaping from Muthaiga police station, wanted murder suspect Kelvin Kang’ethe was arrested on Tuesday night in Ngong.
The suspect, who is wanted in US for killing his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu in October 2023 and leaving her body at a Boston airport, was arrested at around 9.30pm after showing up at his relative’s place.
The relative who spoke on condition of anonymity said that he convinced Kang’ethe to stay for a while as he waited for the police to arrive as he seemed unsettled.
“Alikuja akaknock mlango ya mbele akasema anataka kuongea na mimi…wife akaenda kuangalia akaniambia ni yeye, nikajaribu kupigia cousin yangu David juu amekuwa aki coordinate nao alikuwa mteja, nikacall aunty yangu wakaongea na yeye ikakuwa nimhold ndio wafike,” he said.
“Niliona hapo nje alikuwa na wasiwasi ni kama anataka kuenda nikamwambia si tuingie tuvute fegi hapa nyuma uniambie vile kunaenda na ndio basi maofisa wakakuja,” Kang’ethe’s relative said.
He added that Kang’ethe hinted that his escape from custody was an inside job.
“Hakuniambia exactly, but it was a big thing yaani ni kama inside job, yaani kitu kama hiyo, pia ameelezea OCPD wa Ngong,” he further said.
He also went on to explain why he sold the fugitive to the police, who was his close friend before he was accused of murder.
“Ameeka watu wengi wa familia kwa shida, kando na hiyo aliua mtu najua and he has to answer…huwezi msaidia sana, watu wamekuwa wakimwambia ajipeane na hajakuwa akijiskia,” he said.
After his escape from custody, Kang’ethe is said to have been hiding at a family farm in Ngong.
His hiding had been planned well before he escaped custody. Three people visited him a day before his escape claiming to be his relatives. They are said to have left him a phone that was to aid him in communication once he was escaped.
The fugitive is currently detained at Industrial Area Remand Prison pending hearing and determination of an extradition proceeding against him.
