The police are still looking for the three inmates, convicted of terrorism, who escaped Kamiti Maximum Prison on Monday.
The inmates, Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda, 34, Joseph Juma Odhiambo, 30Â and 35-year old Mohammed Ali Abikar, planned and executed their escape carefully.
Shikanda is from Mumias and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, Odhiambo from Matungu was serving 15 years for terror related crimes while Abikar was serving a 41-year-jail term, having been convicted in 2019 with three others for their role in the Garissa University attack.
Detectives from Serious Crimes Investigations Unit of the DCI and prison authorities spend over 8 hours on Tuesday in analyzing and deducing how the inmates executed their plan.
Led by the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, detectives concluded that the convicts could have been helped to escape by prison wardens.
Investigations revealed that the trio dislodged a brick on the wall of the cell they were confined in. They would cover the open space with a cardboard to avoid any suspicions.
Detectives are investigating how the inmates dislodged the brick without wardens noticing any commotion.
Through the wall, the three monitored prison wardens as they continued planning their escape.
On the night they escaped, they used broomsticks and blankets to make ropes they used to scale the two high perimeter walls surrounding the prison.
It was further established that the inmates had drilled a hole from where they dislodged the brick from inside the prison to the outside.
Detectives recovered a rusty chisel that is believed to have been used in dislodging the block and a razor that was used in cutting pieces of blankets for making the ropes.
The three managed to beat three layers of security. The prison cells are guarded by police officers. Other officers are staged at the five watchtowers and are able to see all corners of the prison.
Aside from that, the prison is well lit with powerful lights. There are also CCTV cameras monitoring activities inside and outside the prison.
Seven prison wardens have since been arrested in relation to the incident. The seven are currently in detention for 25 days as investigations into the matter continue.
