Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper has decided to back ODM’s Abdulswamad Shariff for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat after Mike Sonko’s fight to be on the ballot bore no fruits.
Sonko decided to give up the fight and feeling betrayed(by Azimio), he chose to shift to DP William Ruto’s camp, UDA.
His petition challenging his impeachment as Nairobi governor was unsuccessful yet the election period was fast approaching. He also decided to support UDA’s Hassan Omar for the Mombasa gubernatorial position.
Aside from Wiper, Jubilee also made a similar decision. Both parties, that are under the Azimio la umoja-OKA umbrella, lacked candidates to fill the positions.
Sheik Omar Twaha, Wiper chairman in Coast, said that the party was forced to make the decision after Sonko and his running mate to be Ali Mbogo defected to Ruto’s camp. The duo were offered a good deal to support Kenya Kwanza team.
“We have an agreement in Azimio and we can go against the agreement that our party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka had with Raila Amollo Odinga. Secondly, as wiper we do not condone tribalism,” Twaha said while his Jubilee counterpart added,
“As Jubilee we had decided that we had no governor and we were waiting for a communication from the headquarters of which it was communicated that since we are under Azimio, the one we will be supporting is Abdulswamad Shariff.”
Sonko joined Wiper in March this year to contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial race but has been coming second in opinion polls after Shariff who has been leading with over 50%.
Omar on the other came third with a percentage of below 10 thus dimming his hopes of defeating Shariff with only 5 days to the general elections.
