Wiper Democratic leader Steven Kalonzo Musyoka has been dealt a blow by the Chebukati led Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The IEBC has settled on a list of 16 presidential aspirants who are set to go through another phase of nomination which will commence on Sunday.
Previously, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had announced that 56 Kenyans had expressed interest to vie for the top seat.
However, 40 aspirants did not meet the strict requirements by the IEBC. Amongst the tough requirements were 48,000 signatures of registered voters in at least 24 counties to endorse their presidential bid.
Amongst the notable aspirants to be kicked out of the top race is the Wiper party leader Steven Kalonzo Musyoka. Musyoka had announced his bid last Monday after he was not named the Azimio La Umoja Coalition runningmate. The ODM leader instead settled on the former Gichugu member of parliament Martha Karua.
Despite submitting his documents to the IEBC accompanied by the signatures of the registered voters, Kalonzo Musyoka and his runningmate Andrew Sunkuli failed to make it.
In the meantime, the 16 contenders are expected to reduce even further as they submit their documents to the IEBC on Sunday. They will be required to submit clearance certificates from relevant agencies to show compliance with Chapter 6 of the constitution on leadership and integrity.
The Wiper boss had threatened to go all the way to the ballot, something which forced his party to intervene.
