National assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has challenged Members of Parliament to stop voicing the issue of hiked fuel prices in Baraza meetings.
Instead, Muturi has urged the MPs to take a debate in parliament on Tuesday with a proposal aimed at reducing taxes on fuel.
Speaking at St.Micheal Catholic Church, Kiangugi at Runyenjes constituency, Muturi said that the high fuel prices have increased the cost of living.
“While I reckon that the cost of living has sharply risen due to others among them, cost of fuel, I challenged Members of National assembly to move this debate from Baraza to the house when it resume on Tuesday next week, and bring a proposal to reduce taxes on fuel.” Speaker Muturi Said.
Muturi who has declared his interest in vying for presidency in 2022 general elections was in company of Runyenjes constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Erick Muchangi and nominated Mp Hon Cecily Mbarire.
The hiked fuel prices have raised an uproar among Kenyans with politicians claiming that the high fuel prices have made life more difficult for Kenyans who are struggling with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last week, the Senate summoned Energy CS Charles Keter, Petroleum and Mining CS John Munyes together with EPRA to appear before the house on Tuesday 21 to provide answers as to why over the fuel subsidy was eliminated.
“I direct that the committee on Energy immediately issue summonses to the two Cabinet Secretaries and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) to appear on Tuesday. All senators should be invited to sit at this chamber,” said Lusaka.
Lawmakers want the CSs to explain why the State stopped subsidies, with the expensive fuel set to unleash pricing pressure across the economy and have ramifications on the cost of living measure.
The summonses followed request for a statement filed by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei over Tuesday’s increase of petroleum prices by EPRA.
