Junet Mohamed has admitted he is facing an uphill battle in defending his Suna East parliamentary seat in the forthcoming 2022 general election.
The Minority Leader in National Assembly spoke on the challenge he is facing in Suna East while addressing ODM delegates from Western Kenya.
Junet said Migori county has a lot of Luhyas and mentioned one who is fiercely challenging him in 2022 polls.
“Although I didn’t want to speak today but because you have given me a chance, I must echo one or two words. I know Luhyas and Luos have been closely together since time memorial and history dictates that nobody will ever strangle the bond created by these two tribes,” said Junet.
Adding that;
“There are even so many Luhyas in my constituency in Migori and there is a Luhya aspirant who wants to replace me in the next year’s general election. I might lose my seat to a Luhya if I joke around.”
Junet was born on October 25th 1977 to the family of Sheikh Nuh Mohammed who hails from Mandera County but relocated to Migori where he started a business.
He schooled at Migori Primary School before proceeding to Lenana School for his secondary education.
Junet later joined the University of Nairobi and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.
He begun his political career in 2003 when he was elected the mayor of Migori. His national political career however began in 2013 when he was elected Suna East MP on an ODM party ticket.
Junet became the first Kenyan Somali to be elected in the Nyanza region owing to the fact that he grew up there and had a very many connections and friends.
He was again reelected in the August 2017 general elections. Later on, he became the minority leader for the National Assembly and is very close to the ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
Junet seeks to defend his seat in the forthcoming 2022 general election, but now he faces stiff competition from the Luhya aspirant.
