Kenyans were quick to tell off Koigi Wamwere after he conveniently misinterpreted Junet Mohamed’s words that the Raila government will be for Luos.
Dubbed “Presidential Candidates Must Denounce Negative Ethnicity In their Campaigns,” Koigi Wamwere castigated the Suna East member of parliament over his recent sentiments.
Below was the full statement by Koigi Wamwere:
“Tragically, Raila Odinga failed to admonish Junet Mohammed, one of his key supporters when as a tactic to win over the Luo community, he pronounced that, if Raila wins next election, his government would be a government of the Luo or Nyanza region. Junet then asked the media not to announce this given that it would annoy Kikuyu leaders who had been in power for more than twenty years. Even if Kikuyu leadership has governed ethnically for many years, Raila rule should rectify ethnic rule not emulate and perpetuate it.
This shocking announcement made many think that, given continued dominance of our politics and elections by negative ethnicity, IEBC must make all presidential candidates denounce negative ethnicity, lest the country will once more plunge into genocide of Rwanda in 1994 or the bloody crisis in Kenya in 2007/08.
Though Raila is campaigning on a platform of Azimio la Umoja, this cannot happen on the basis of ethnic natives and foreigners, a classification that Raila should denounce and put out on the spot before they begin to spread.
Campaigning on ethnic platforms, ethnic unities, parties and coalitions and not unifying nationalism will easily plunge the country into a quagmire of negative ethnicity and ethnic divisions if not genocidal Armageddon.”
This statement did not however go well with a number of Kenyans as they reminded Koigi Wamwere to stop dragging the Luo community since Junet did not represent their views. Below are the samples of how majority reacted:
“Have you ever supported any tribe, apart from your tribe, can you even vote for Raila,Junet is not a luo and we voted him,Raila convinced us(luos) to vote for Kibaki, and we did, whether,Junet was joking,or not, kenyans have become petty, why can you tell us how you can unite kenyans rather than fueling what Junet said.”
“2007 if not stealing raila’s victory would it happen stop telling people nonsense #wajinga waliisha Kenya this is God’s time even if you try to manipulate every thing about raila and luo community too much English isn’t a better advice you are the most old man tribalism in Kenya leave us now.”
“This is absurd. It’s absurd because a whole you can choose to blow out Junet’s sentiment. Junet, never said the government will belongs to Luo community. The last time I checked, Junet himself is not a Luo, neither is Nyanza Region a Luo only affair. We have all tribes in the region.”
