In just a span of one week there have been three reported cases of deaths involving jumping off storey buildings in Kilifi, Mombasa and Nakuru counties.
23-year-old Lucy Nyokabi and her boyfriend committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of Bigsal apartment in Mtwapa, Kilifi county on Saturday night October 2nd.
On October 4th, Ugandan national Suleiman Mayanja pushed a 25-year-old woman to her death at his rented apartment in Nyali, Mombasa county.
The foreigner pushed the woman from the balcony of his Sunny Side Apartment before he fled the scene only to be arrested days later.
On October 5th, Paul Ochieng stabbed his wife Mary Njeri Kamande in the chest before jumping off the fourth floor of their apartment located at Afraha in Nakuru town.
40-year-old Ochieng is said to have had a dispute with his 20-year-old wife which turned tragic when he fatally stabbed her.
Subcounty police commander Elena Kabukuru said the woman was stabbed on the left side of her chest and died immediately, Ochieng tried to commit suicide by jumping off their apartment building.
“The man tried to commit suicide by jumping from the four-storeyed apartment and he escaped death with injuries on the limbs,” police boss Kabukuru said.
Kabukuru added that the incident happened at 9:30pm, and that the man stabbed his wife in front of their daughters aged five and four years.
“The children were evacuated from the house and are currently living with neighbours as the police locate the couple’s next of kin,” added Kabukuru.
The police officer said the couple had only moved into the house two weeks earlier. She said Ochieng was taken to Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital for treatment while the woman’s body was taken to Nakuru county mortuary.
Kabukuru also revealed that Ochieng is currently under police surveillance in hospital and that he will be charged with murder once he recuperates.
It is not clear where Ochieng works as his claims of working for a leading parastatal were dismissed, while some neighbors claimed that he is a rugby player.
