Several journalists from mainstream media in the country are nursing injuries and stab wounds after being attacked by bouncers at Kettle House Bar and Grill in Lavington.
The journalists had joined police officers attached to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in an impromptu raid at the club that was suspected to be selling Shisha which was banned in the country.
The officers visited the club at around 11 pm on Friday night to arrest the managers.
The bouncers, who were 8 in total, however spotted the journalists and attacked them, raining blows on them and seizing their equipment.
“Nation’s photographer Boniface Bogita was stabbed twice in the ribs, Jane Kibira of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was stabbed in the back and Standard Group’s Boniface Okendo and Francis Odee were also beaten up and badly wounded,” a local media reported.
According to an informant from NACADA, two officers also sustained serious injuries. He added that they turned against the officials and journalist since the club is owned by a powerful individual in the country.
The NACADA official further vowed that the Authority will continue with such raids to ensure that those contravening the law are brought to book.
The suspects were however arrested and taken to Kileleshwa police station, ahead of their arraignment on Monday.
“Police officers responded and were able to use necessary force and effected the arrest of 21 persons who are currently in custody awaiting to be charged for various offenses,” the police report stated.
The injured journalists received treatment at Agha Khan hospital.
