UDA chairman Johnson Muthama has released a statement regarding the disruption of DP William Ruto’s Rally in Kondele, Kisumu.
The former Machakos senator has advised IEBC to disqualify the Orange Democratic Movement party from participating in the coming general elections over the Wednesday incident where rowdy youths hurled stones at the DP as he addressed the crowd.
“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) should take action and discipline the ODM party by even disqualifying them from participating in the coming general election,” Muthama said.
Muthama accused the Kenya police and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) for failing to act in a way that will inspire confidence among Kenyans.
He said that the incident should act as a wakeup call for Kenyan citizens as well as the institutions that are responsible for ensuring peaceful elections and transition after the elections.
“It’s a day that reminded peace loving Kenyans that the dark days of “Kanu zones” when opposition political parties were barred from campaigning in some parts of the country have never really gone away,” the statement read.
Muthama rubbished the police’s statement that the DP had been warned about the tension in Kondele prior to his visit.
“The question that police should answer is when did they know of the chaos and what did they do about it to ensure the stoning does not happen and it is stopped?” he posed.
He cited the incident when stones were thrown at Jimmy Wanjigi during his political tour in Migori saying that the government institutions went mump on the matter.
According to Muthama, NCIC should have stopped political incitement by now instead of organizing workshops in hotels.
“The NCIC has been lethargic and carefree at best. This is a commission best known for organising workshops at top hotels with nothing to show for it. The commission should, by now, have arrested an emerging pattern where politicians of certain political earnings have been using words that can be construed as intended to incite Kenyans,” Muthama said.
