Businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi has shared details of why Uhuru Kenyatta and now William Ruto’s regime have been going after him.
In an interview with Citizen TV, the father of two revealed that their history dates back to 2009, when Uhuru and Ruto were facing a case of Crimes Against Humanity at the International Criminal Court(ICC).
According to him, the two approached him then so that they would win elections in 2013 and also overcome the ICC matter
“In 2009, William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta approached me. They said they have a big problem called ICC that was going to jail them, destroy their past and future if they are convicted. They approached me with the view that somehow or anther I was going to chart that would get them into power and get rid of ICC,” he revealed
Wanjigi was questioned what he would have benefitted from helping Uhuru and Ruto and he said;
“I was to get this in return, we had a covenant which said, ‘If the country saves you, you must save the country.’ I believed at the time it was a golden opportunity for what we in Kikuyu land call ‘Itwika’, in other words a break from the past. That means that with a new constitution and a new generation in power, the game would change. We would no longer go back to the ills of the past because what has been there has not worked.”
Such ills that Wanjigi cited the 2007/2008 post election violence where 1400 Kenyans lost their lives.
Wanjigi denied funding Uhuru and Ruto’s 2013 campaigns, saying that his role was developing a course that people would have bought.
“At that time, we sold two things, first it was the unity of the country to take away the ills of tribal fighting, that was critical. Number two we sold a new generation to power, digital vs analogue. We sold a course for that grow. My role in that, they felt I had the energy, the zeal, the capacity to be able to help them from 2009 and go right into the election in 2013 and win,” he said
After winning and succeeding into power, Wanjigi says Ruto and Uhuru broke the pact, and that was the origin of their political wars.
“It was no longer about saving Kenya. I was about themselves and very early in the administration of Uhuru/Ruto regime, by 2014 we were fighting because they broke that pact,” he said
Wanjigi added that he still has the original Memorandum of Understanding between him and the duo. He said that he has never made the MOU public because he promised Uhuru and Ruto.
“I will never make it public unless need be. They didn’t even trust themselves with the original. I’ll never break that promise,” he said.
