American actor and rapper Will Smith has eventually apologized on camera for slapping comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars award ceremony three months ago.
Smith had offered a written apology through his Instagram account and has since been silent about the matter.
The Fresh Prince of Belaire landed a hot slap on Rock’s cheek after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett’s Baldness.
In a close to 6-minute long video posted on his YouTube channel, Smith explained why he did not apologize on stage at the Oscars ceremony adding that he had tried to reach out to rock after the incident that went viral for days but he was not ready to talk to him.
“I was fogged out by that point. It’s all fuzzy. I have reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he is not ready to talk and when he is he will reach out. I will say to you Chris I apologize to you, my behavior was unacceptable and I am here wherever you are ready to talk,” Smith said.
He also extended his apology to Chris’ mother and his family that got hurt because of the incident.
“I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuances and complexities of what happened in that moment. I am not going to try to unpack all of that right now but I can say to all of you that there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment, there is no part of me that thinks that was the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insults ” Smith said.
He further said that Jada had nothing to do with him slapping Rock. Jada had rolled her eyes making Smith who was at first amused by the joke, stand up and put Rock in his place.
“I made a choice on my own from my own experience, from my history with Chris, Jada had nothing to do with it, I am sorry babe,” Smith said as he apologized to his family as well as other nominees at the Oscars awards for ruining their moment.
Lupita Nyong’o was also present at the event and found herself trending in memes because of how she reacted.
