The battle lines are being drawn and it is becoming evident the race to 2022 elections will be between Raila Odinga and his nemesis William Ruto.
Details have now emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga are working on plans to a coalition ahead of the 2022 general election.
The Standard reports that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the ruling Jubilee party may sign cooperation deal in a number of areas including division of positions, management of national affairs among other political interests.
On Friday, June 20, ODM chairman John Mbadi stated that the party was willing to form a new outfit with jubilee and other political players.
“It is no secret that there will be a new outfit. Parties are formed to win power and govern. They are not charitable organizations. Towards the 2022 elections, political visibility and strength will be achieved only if we strategise properly,” Mbadi said.
Mbadi added that the deal with jubilee would not involve government appointments.
“We must practice what we preach. Ours is a long haul and not for short-term gains but people should not be shocked if ODM insiders get government appointments,” Mbadi added.
Ruto on the other hand seems to have resigned to the fact that he is no longer the preferred candidate of President Uhuru Kenyatta and he is charging his own path.
Last Friday Ruto together with jubilee party rebels led by Moses Kuria and ousted majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen unveiled an outfit JUblee Asili, which many analysts believe is the vehicle Ruto is planning to use for his 2022 State House bid.
On May 10, Siaya Senator James Orengo hinted at a political alliance between the president and Odinga.
He stated that the two have been working together and would continue to do so even in future.
“There is a high possibility that the two top leaders will form a political alliance ahead of 2022 because they are closely working together to stabilize the country,” Orengo stated.
